It takes more than a month...

It takes more than a month…
To heal the invisible wounds beneath the purple, yellow, and green bruises.

It takes more than a month…
To undo the lies that you believed about yourself, these lies had crept in so slowly, eroding sense of self.  

It takes more than a month…
To believe that you can leave, that you deserve better, that your children deserve better.
It takes leaving more than once, falling half a dozen times before you get up the courage to leave this time for good.

It takes all of us to speak up…
To not turn a blind eye to our sister’s black eye.
To say something when our brother is acting out of line.

It takes courage to tell a child they will never see mommy & daddy again.
It takes a village of aunties, sisters, uncles and grandparents to stand in the gap and raise a child.

It takes more than a month to heal…
We need to tell our stories, speak our truth, say our goodbyes, sing our lullabies, and dance it out.
We need to lift up our prayers, love our neighbor as ourselves.

It takes more than talking about it in statistics;
1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.

October is domestic violence awareness month.
Awareness is a beginning, not a destination.
We honor those that have passed, by making an inward commitment to never forget, a promise to work towards a future free of violence for ourselves, our homes, our communities and our world.
